Activity: In this lesson, we designed our own unique monster with clay. We had worked out the clay until it was soft and then began the shaping process. We used our fingers to shape a big hole into the clay which would turn out to be the mouth. Once we had that done, we used another smaller ball of clay to make our features, also known as the added. We used a term called scoring to place our adding on, which means we made little scratches where we were going to place our features. We also used water to stick them together. We did some subtracting as well, which means we took clay out of our monster. We needed 3 added elements and 3 subtracted elements. After we had all of our adding and subtracting done, we started to paint. We had one warm color and one cool color. Afterward, we added 3 descriptions of our monster.
Extension Activity: For an extension activity, I would use this in a science lesson. After we had learned about different animals, I would have the class pick their favorite animal that we had talked about and make that out of their clay. They would only be making the head of the animal just as we did the monsters.
